Description:
FOR SALE - One Complete Dept 56 City display with handcrafted mountains made from hydrocal plaster which is very hard. Designed to sit on most any size fireplace mantle but can be used in other applications. Must be scene to be fully appreciated. City is completely wired (inside mountains) and all lights turn on with one remote control switch. Includes Dept 56 Sounds of the City which are played through hidden stereo speakers (in the mountains). Sounds include all the bustling sounds of a Christmas City: carolers, trains whistles, church bells, horns beeping, dogs barking, etc., etc. I built this in 1991, all pieces are retired. Each has their original box, and the mountain city fits into a large custom made box for storage in garage or attic. Most piece were bought in Gatlinburg, TN. @ full retail prices which we were there for the Dept 56 show. Total value is well over $1,000 just for the items. The value of the mountain and city platform is easily several hundred dollars for labor and materials, wiring etc. Making the mountains involves time crafting a skelton and dipping paper towels in hydrocal plaster as well as using various rubber plaster molds.
All buildings and over 90% of the accessories are from the Dept 56 Christmas in the City series except for the church on the far left. We picked this Knottinghill Church from Dept 56 Dickens Village because it reminded us of our home church.
SET UP
During the setup stage the large mountain scene is lifted by two people out of its storage box, and placed on a mantle or in my case shelf ledge. (At least two lg screws should secure it). A few trees are already in place but adjusted. Each building, car, accessories and people are removed from the original Dept 56 boxes and carefully placed in their respective positions. Trees are arranged in between buildings, and the people of the city are placed with care in their designated places. All wiring is in place but bulbs are checked and placed inside the buildings and various street lights and Christmas light sets are plugged into their receptacles. The final stage in the set up process is to spread the baking soda all around using a teaspoon and adjusting with a small artist brush. Fine details can be added in the pretend snow to mimic foot prints, sled tracks etc. Taking time to add details like this brings the city to life.
TAKE DOWN
After Christmas I remove every building, figurine and accessory (other than some trees) and put them in their own Dept 56 box. Each box is stored in one of three large cardboard boxes (included) and the mountain scene is placed in its own box.
Example of Cost: 56.55344 "Hollydale's Department Store" Introduced in 1991 - Retired in 1997 - Original cost $85.00 - Box is marked $85.00
